About this place
Daehae Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu serving Catholics in and around Daedo-dong in southern Pohang. Its patrons are the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. This dedication recalls the history of persecution and martyrdom in the Korean Catholic Church and gives the parish a distinct identity rooted in the faith heritage of Korean Catholicism within the ordinary life of an urban parish.
A number of parishes were formed in the Pohang area as the city expanded in the latter half of the twentieth century, and Daehae emerged within that process. Today the church is a center for local liturgy, catechesis, fellowship, and service. It also represents one stage in the broader development through which the Catholic community of Pohang grew from a single parish into a network of parishes serving different local districts.
History & origins
Daehae Parish was established on January 18, 1984. According to an archdiocesan publication summarizing the evangelization history of the Pohang area, Pohang Parish—today’s Jukdo Catholic Church—was established in 1950. As the local Catholic community grew, Deoksu Parish was separated in 1978, followed in time by Daehae, Daejam, and other parishes. Daehae thus began during a period when Catholic pastoral care in Pohang was being organized more closely around distinct local districts.
The community subsequently became established as a parish in southern Pohang. On October 20, 2019, Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-Kil presided over a Mass of Thanksgiving for the parish’s 35th anniversary, during which 138 people received Confirmation. The anniversary marked the continuity of a parish founded amid the city’s expansion in the 1980s and sustained across successive generations of Catholics.
