About this place
Chunghyo Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Chunghyo-dong, Gyeongju, with Mary, Mother of God, as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics in Chunghyo-dong and the western part of central Gyeongju gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. As a relatively recently established parish, it grew from the expansion of local residential areas and the division of an existing Catholic community.
The church was built to provide a proper liturgical and pastoral home for an independent parish, with space for worship, education, and community gathering. Devotion to Mary, Mother of God, is an important part of the parish’s identity. Having been formed from older parishes in the Gyeongju area, Chunghyo shows how the local Catholic community expanded in response to changes in where people lived.
History & origins
Chunghyo Parish began as the Catholic population and residential patterns in Gyeongju created a need for a new pastoral unit. A Maeil Shinmun report on the dedication of the new church states that Chunghyo was formed from Seongdong and Seonggeon parishes in 2012. Current information from the Archdiocese of Daegu gives the official establishment date as August 24, 2012.
The new parish did not initially have a permanent church of its own. Mass and parish activities continued in temporary space while the community prepared for a new building. Construction began in May 2015, the church was completed in 2016, and the new church was dedicated in October of that year.
Completion of the church marked the transition from a newly established community using temporary facilities to a parish with its own stable pastoral base. The history of Chunghyo shows how a growing Catholic community in Gyeongju was divided into a new parish and, after several years of preparation, acquired a church of its own.
