Changgi Mission Station

History & origins

The place name Chaenggi appears relatively early in records describing the spread of Catholicism in the Seongju area. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that after the Byeongin Persecution, Catholics settled in mountain villages of the Gyeongsang region and faith communities also developed around several villages in Seongju. By early 1917, the combined Catholic population of Chaenggi, Neukbawi, Gomsil, and nearby places had exceeded one hundred, showing that an organized Catholic presence was already established around Chaenggi.

These communities did not initially form independent parishes, but were served through broad parish territories and networks of mission stations. Seongju mission station passed under Waegwan Parish and was raised to parish status in 1950, while the jurisdiction of outlying mission communities was adjusted as new parishes were created. This pattern shows how mission stations carried parish pastoral care into rural areas where transportation was difficult.

After Gacheon Parish was separated from Seongju Parish and established in 1961, the Catholic Encyclopedia lists Chaenggi among its mission stations. Current Archdiocesan parish information still identifies Chaenggi as belonging to Gacheon Parish. Reliable official sources do not, however, provide a confirmed date for the first construction of the Chaenggi mission-station building or a detailed reconstruction chronology, so this account is limited to the documented community and changes of jurisdiction.
