About this place

Bonggok Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in the Gumi area. The official diocesan profile gives its patron simply as “the Archangel.” Centered on Bonggok-dong, the parish provides Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for local Catholics and also has pastoral responsibility for Apo Mission Station. It therefore combines the role of an urban parish with responsibility for connecting a mission community located away from the parish center.

Although Bonggok is a comparatively recent parish, it has become an established Catholic community providing a foundation for formation, liturgy, fellowship, and service across generations. A visitor can understand its place in Catholic life in Gumi more clearly by seeing not only the church building but also the pastoral link between the parish and its mission station.

History & origins

Bonggok Parish was established on August 29, 2003. It took shape as an independent parish as the parish structure of the Gumi area within the Archdiocese of Daegu became more differentiated, and it subsequently developed as the pastoral community responsible for the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics around Bonggok-dong.

In September 2023, twenty years after its establishment, the parish celebrated a 20th-anniversary thanksgiving Mass together with Confirmation. The official diocesan record notes that 105 faithful received Confirmation, showing that the anniversary was not merely commemorative but also a sacramental celebration of the community's maturity.

Public diocesan sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the exact territorial division before the parish was established or every stage of the early church-building process. The verifiable historical framework is therefore the establishment of the parish in 2003 and its growth over two decades to the 2023 thanksgiving celebration.
