About this place

Bongdeok Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Nam-gu, with Saint Peter the Apostle as its patron. It is the local parish community where Catholics regularly receive Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and faith formation, and where generations of parishioners continue liturgy, fellowship, and service together.

Having Saint Peter the Apostle as patron gives the parish an apostolic sign centered on faith and the unity of the Church. A visitor can therefore understand Bongdeok not simply as a church building, but as an established parish that has long supported the sacramental and communal faith life of Catholics in the Nam-gu area of Daegu.

History & origins

Bongdeok Parish was established on July 5, 1977. The official diocesan parish profile clearly records this date and the parish patron, allowing the point at which an independent pastoral parish was established in the Bongdeok area to be identified. The basic public sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct every stage of the original territorial division or church construction, so the history is best kept to what can be verified.

In July 2017, marking forty years since the establishment of the parish, Auxiliary Bishop John Bosco Jang Shin-ho celebrated a 40th-anniversary thanksgiving Mass at Bongdeok and administered Confirmation to 114 faithful. The liturgy was a diocesan commemoration of a community that had continued beyond a generation. The establishment in 1977 and the 40th-anniversary celebration provide two clear milestones in Bongdeok Parish's long development as a local church community.
