History & origins

Apryang Parish was officially established by the Archdiocese of Daegu on August 30, 1996. As residential areas and the university district of eastern Gyeongsan were growing, a new parish became necessary. The community did not begin with a spacious permanent church; instead, parish life was initially conducted in a panel-built temporary church and educational spaces. An Archdiocesan record marking the parish’s twenty-eighth anniversary in 2024 reconfirms this founding chronology.

The parish took on an important new character in 2014. According to the Catholic Times, the Archdiocese designated Apryang as a “university-student hub parish.” The decision formally reflected the local reality of Gyeongsan, where several universities and large numbers of students are concentrated. From that point, Apryang expanded liturgy, catechesis, and fellowship for university students and young adults alongside its ministry to local parishioners.

In 2016, the AD Center was established for university ministry. It broadened the parish’s pastoral base by giving students places for prayer, study, counseling, and meetings. At the same time, the limitations of the panel-built church, which had been used for nearly two decades, became increasingly evident, and the parish undertook the construction of a new church.

In 2019, the new church was completed, and the Catholic Times reported that its dedication was scheduled for September 29 of that year. The project marked the transition from a community that had begun in a temporary church to one with a permanent church space, while also creating a stronger base capable of supporting both territorial parish ministry and university-student outreach. Apryang’s history thus shows how a newly established parish developed a distinctive ministry to students and young adults in response to its changing local environment.
