About this place

Daebang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 15 (Yeongdeungpo-Geumcheon) of the Archdiocese of Seoul. Despite its name, the present church is located at 7 Gammasan-ro 89-gil in Singil-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu. The Catholic Church Directory lists it as “Daebang-dong (district seat),” records an establishment date of October 26, 1954, and names St. Joseph as its patron.

It is a long-established community that grew from a mission station under Dorim-dong Parish and became independent. Serving Catholics around Daebang and Singil, it also contributed to the later expansion of parish life in southern Yeongdeungpo by giving rise to new parishes.

History & origins

The Catholic community in the Daebang area existed before Korea's liberation as a mission station under Yeongdeungpo Parish, now Dorim-dong Parish. From only about five Catholic households before liberation, it grew to roughly sixty households by the end of 1945. A church-building committee was formed in 1953, and the community became an independent parish in 1954. The Catholic Encyclopedia in Korea records that the church was blessed by Archbishop Paul Ro Ki-nam on November 21, 1954.

As the parish grew, it expanded its educational and pastoral facilities and later gave rise to neighboring parishes. When the old church became too small, a new church was built and dedicated on September 18, 1983. Its history thus shows a community that grew from a mission station into an established parish and then into a mother parish for further Catholic expansion in the area.
