About this place

청풍공소 is a mission station of Namcheon-dong Parish in the Jecheon district of the Diocese of Wonju. It is the local Catholic community through which the faithful of Cheongpung-myeon in Jecheon remain connected to their mother parish. The Catholic Directory of Korea explicitly identifies Cheongpung not as an independent parish but as a mission station under Namcheon-dong Parish.

Because Cheongpung lies in the Cheongpung Lake area at some distance from central Jecheon, the presence of a mission station has particular pastoral significance for local Catholics. Although it is a small community served within the pastoral care of a mother parish rather than a parish with its own resident priest, it provides a place for common prayer and continuity of faith and serves as a link between Namcheon-dong Parish and Catholics living in the Cheongpung area.

History & origins

The Catholic Directory of Korea records 1962 as the establishment year of 청풍공소, showing that the community had a recognized place as a Catholic mission station by the early 1960s. In later decades, its pastoral affiliation changed as parish territories in the Jecheon area were reorganized.

According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Seobudong Parish, Cheongpung Mission Station was transferred from Namcheon-dong Parish to Seobudong Parish on February 21, 1995. A 2003 Catholic Times report, however, again identifies 청풍공소 as a mission station of Namcheon-dong Parish and records the blessing of a Marian statue there on July 15 of that year, presided over by the diocesan bishop. Publicly available sources do not establish the exact date on which it was transferred back from Seobudong to Namcheon-dong.

The current directory lists Namcheon-dong as its mother parish, so the present affiliation is clear. The verifiable historical sequence can therefore be summarized as establishment in 1962, transfer to Seobudong in 1995, and confirmation that it was again under Namcheon-dong by 2003 at the latest. Avoiding an invented date for the return transfer preserves the limits of the surviving public record.
