Sangnam Mission Station is a mission station under Girin Holy Family Parish in the Central District of the Diocese of Chuncheon, serving the local Catholic community in Sangnam-myeon, Inje. The official diocesan mission-station registry lists “Sangnam” under Girin Parish, and the current pastoral information for Girin Parish also confirms that Sangnam Mission Station is part of the parish community.
It is not an independent parish but a mission station operating within the pastoral jurisdiction of Girin Parish. In the broad mountainous territory of Inje, it helps Catholics living at a distance from the parish church maintain a local communal life of faith. Its establishment soon after Girin became a parish also connects it with the extension of the parish’s pastoral care into the surrounding area.
History & origins
The Catholic community in the Girin area passed through a long period as a mission station and quasi-parish before being elevated on April 19, 1994, as Girin Holy Family Parish. According to the diocesan history, a mission-station community had existed in Girin earlier, and after a period in which pastoral care was shared with the military chaplaincy, it developed into an independent parish structure.
The diocesan mission-station registry records Sangnam Mission Station as having been established in January 1995, the year after Girin Parish was founded. Its beginning therefore belongs to the period when the newly established parish was expanding pastoral points of contact for Catholics in surrounding areas. Sangnam has since remained a mission station of Girin Parish, sustaining Catholic communal life in Sangnam-myeon, Inje.
