Sungui Catholic Church

History & origins

In the mid-1960s, rapid urbanization in Incheon brought substantial population growth to the Sungui-dong area, including an increase in the Catholic population. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that the diocese planned a new parish in response and, on December 15, 1969, established Sungui-dong Parish by transferring territory from Dohwa-dong, Yonghyeon-dong, and Dapdong Parishes. Father Alpro Murphy, the first pastor, wanted the new church in the middle of a residential neighborhood to avoid becoming isolated from its neighbors, and therefore envisioned a flexible building closer in concept to a retreat center than to a conventional church design.

The church was designed for use not only in the celebration of Mass but also for meetings and various forms of pastoral activity. Construction continued under the second pastor, Father Josaphat Hong Jong-hak, and the building was completed in September 1970 with one basement level and two stories above ground. This approach shows a pastoral choice to combine liturgical space with rooms for community life in a new urban parish.

The parish subsequently strengthened its internal community organization and catechesis by subdividing neighborhood groups, encouraging evangelization, and offering different forms of instruction for prospective Catholics. As the Catholic population and local conditions changed, some territory was later separated into other parishes, but Sungui-dong has continued as an independent parish to the present. Its history can be summarized as a process of parish establishment in response to urban growth, creation of a church suited to neighborhood life, and gradual consolidation through education and community organization.
