About this place
Myeongdong Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Seoul and the church of Myeongdong Parish, serving as one of the principal historical and symbolic centers of Catholicism in Korea. The current Catholic Directory records the parish as established on April 22, 1882, with the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal dedication.
As the seat of the archbishop, the cathedral is a central liturgical place for the archdiocese and hosts major ecclesial celebrations. The late-nineteenth-century Gothic church is also protected as a national historic heritage site, giving the place significance at the intersection of Korean Catholic history and modern social history.
History & origins
The history of Myeongdong Cathedral is connected to the early Catholic community of central Seoul in the late Joseon period. The Church secured land around Jonghyeon in the 1880s, and major construction of the cathedral began in 1892. After years of work, the church was completed and consecrated in 1898.
The completed building became a landmark of brick Gothic church architecture. After Korea's liberation, the name Myeongdong Cathedral became firmly established. In 1977 the church was designated a national historic site in recognition of its historical and architectural value. It has continued to serve as the cathedral of Seoul and a major site in the history of Korean Catholicism.
