Goryeong Catholic Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in the Goryeong area traces its beginnings to the 1930s. The Digital Goryeong Culture Encyclopedia records that Ignatius Gim Man-deuk moved to Goryeong in 1931 and helped introduce the Catholic faith to the area, after which other Catholics moved in and a community gradually took shape. As the number of believers grew, Gim’s home was designated as the Goryeong mission station in 1940, providing a more regular framework for communal Catholic life.

Missionary activity and the growth of local mission stations continued, and official records of the Archdiocese of Daegu give December 18, 1964 as the establishment date of Goryeong Parish. As the community developed from a mission-station setting into a parish, Catholics in the Goryeong area gained a more stable base for a life centered on Mass and the sacraments. Mission stations also continued to develop in the surrounding rural districts, maintaining a network between the parish and smaller communities.

As aging facilities eventually required renewal, the parish undertook a major reconstruction, and the new church was consecrated in July 2011. The Archdiocese records that a project lasting about one year rebuilt not only the church but also the pastoral center, convent, kindergarten, and education building. Funding came from the offerings of parishioners together with support from several other parishes in the archdiocese and benefactors. The history of Goryeong thus traces a community that began around a house mission station and grew through parish establishment and church reconstruction into an enduring local base of Catholic life.
