About this place
Dapsimni Catholic Church of Mary, Mother of God, is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Dongdaemun–Jungnang District 7 at 29 Jeonnong-ro. The current Catholic Church Directory gives May 8, 1975, as its establishment date, and its patronal title is Mary, Mother of God.
The present Dapsimni community was separated from Jeonnong-dong Parish and serves Catholics in Dapsimni and nearby areas through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Its patronal devotion honors the Blessed Virgin Mary specifically under the title Mother of God.
History & origins
Preparations for the present Dapsimni Parish began in 1974 when Jeonnong-dong Parish approved a separation plan and purchased the current site. The exact establishment date differs by one day: the current Catholic Church Directory gives May 8, 1975, while the Catholic Encyclopedia gives May 9. The first pastor celebrated the community's first Mass on June 1.
Construction progressed from 1975, and by December 1977 Mass could be celebrated in the new building. Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan dedicated the church on May 21, 1978. It is important not to confuse this parish with the community established in 1965 under the name “Dapsimni Parish,” which became Jeonnong-dong Parish when the present Dapsimni Parish was separated in 1975.
