Heungwang-ri Mission Chapel

History & origins

The exact founding year of Heungwang-ri Mission Station and the early history of its building are not sufficiently documented in official public sources, but the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea confirms that it existed for a long time within the mission-station network of Ganghwa Parish. Ganghwa Parish became an independent parish in 1958 and at first covered the whole of Ganghwa County; the encyclopedia explicitly lists Heungwang-ri among the mission stations belonging to that parish.

As the pastoral structure of Ganghwa Island became more differentiated, the jurisdiction over Heungwang-ri also changed. The current official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Manisan Quasi-Parish as the mother parish of Heungwang-ri. Manisan Quasi-Parish was established in 2004 to serve the southern part of Ganghwa, and Heungwang-ri has continued the faith life of its local community under that pastoral jurisdiction.

The verifiable history of Heungwang-ri therefore centers less on an exact founding date and more on the transition from its place in the older network of Ganghwa Parish mission stations to its present relationship with Manisan Quasi-Parish. Without speculating about gaps in the record, this change of jurisdiction itself shows how Catholic pastoral organization on Ganghwa Island was reorganized as local communities developed.
