Hoein Mission

History & origins

After Boeun Parish was separated from Okcheon Parish and established in 1955, the Catholic community in the Boeun area expanded its pastoral reach by forming mission stations in the surrounding townships. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Hoein Mission Station was established in 1963 during this period of growth. This is the key record identifying when the Catholic community in Hoein was organized as a distinct mission station within the parish structure.

Boeun Parish at that time served a broad rural territory, linking existing mission stations such as Songjuk, Hagae, and Baekseok with newer communities. The establishment of Hoein was part of this expansion of mission-station pastoral care. By having a local mission station, Catholics in Hoein-myeon were able to maintain a center for common prayer and community faith life without relying solely on travel to the parish church in Boeun-eup.

Detailed records of later building changes or relocations at Hoein are limited in the sources reviewed, but the current Diocese of Cheongju list still records a Hoein Mission Station at the same location. The verifiable history is therefore best centered on its establishment in 1963 and the continuity of the community to the present, illustrating how Boeun Parish developed a pastoral structure suited to a wide rural region.
