About this place
Jawol Mission Station is an island Catholic community of the Diocese of Incheon, providing a place where Catholics on Jawoldo in Jawol-myeon, Ongjin County can continue their life of faith. The Korean Catholic Church’s directory resources and the Korean Catholic Bishops’ Conference guide to churches near tourist destinations confirm that a Catholic mission station remains active on Jawoldo.
Unlike an independent parish where a priest is normally assigned, a mission station is a small community that gathers under the pastoral care of a parish to pray and to participate in Mass and the sacraments at appointed times. In the geographical conditions of an island dependent on ferry transport, Jawol Mission Station is especially important as a point of connection between local Catholics and the wider Church. Visitors should therefore approach it with an understanding of the pastoral circumstances of an island mission station rather than expect the continuous operation of a mainland parish church.
