Wolseong Mission Station is a Catholic mission community under Hwangdeung Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju. It provides a nearby place where Catholics in the Wolseong area of Iksan can continue communal faith life without having to gather only at the parish church. The current diocesan list identifies Wolseong as one of the mission stations of Hwangdeung Parish and gives the same location as the package. It has the character of a rural mission community in which Catholics living at some distance from the parish center have prayed and maintained liturgical life together.
The significance of Wolseong lies less in its size than in the continuity of the community. A diocesan feature on the mission station describes religious objects and furnishings that have remained with the building over many decades, including the altar, crucifix, statues, and Stations of the Cross. These traces show that Wolseong is not merely an auxiliary facility, but a small Catholic community that has preserved everyday prayer and the handing on of faith while remaining connected to Hwangdeung Parish.
History & origins
The history of Wolseong Mission Station reaches back to 1937. According to the Diocese of Jeonju, Gaspar Park Cheol-geun, who had moved from Sanggwan in Wanju, began holding mission-station prayers in his home, and his elder brother Joseph Park Il-jong served as the first lay leader and helped establish the community. What began as a gathering in a private home gradually became a local Catholic community.
The faithful then worked together to secure a dedicated place of worship, completing the mission-station building in 1960. Wolseong joined the other mission communities of Hwangdeung Parish for special occasions such as the Ascension, and memories remain of Catholics walking to Hwangdeung Church for Christmas Eve Mass. Such practices show how a geographically separated mission station remained closely linked to the parish as one faith community.
The building itself was maintained as the decades passed. The diocesan record notes that the roof was improved in 2004 and that parishioners replaced the old wooden floor together in 2013. Wolseong's history thus illustrates a characteristic development of a rural Catholic mission station: beginning with prayer in a family home, gaining its own building, and preserving that place through the continuing prayer and cooperation of local Catholics as village life changed around it.
