History & origins

The exact original foundation date of Sabong Mission Station cannot be established from the public sources currently available. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, however, lists Sabong among the mission stations under Munsan Parish, confirming that the community had long been connected with Munsan within the modern parish structure. The Catholic memory of the area has also been closely linked with the tomb of Blessed Antonio Jeong Chan-mun.

As Munsan Parish preserved and promoted devotion to the martyr’s grave, it also renewed the physical space of Sabong Mission Station. Catholic shrine information records that, to commemorate the centenary of Munsan Parish, a new mission chapel was built and blessed in 2005 at the site of the martyr’s tomb. This made the connection between the mission station used by local Catholics and the place of prayer visited by pilgrims more visible within a single setting.

Sabong remains under the pastoral care of Munsan Parish, and its location in front of the martyr’s cemetery continues to define the place. The most cautious history of the mission station therefore focuses not on an unverified early foundation date but on its long-standing place within Munsan Parish, the construction of the new mission chapel in 2005, and its continuing integration with the veneration of Blessed Antonio Jeong Chan-mun.
