Mahyeon Mission Chapel

History & origins

The origins of Mahyeon Mission Station can be traced to a migration that took place in 1959, before its official establishment date. According to a 2009 field report by the Catholic Times, sixty-six households from Uljin who had lost their homes in Typhoon Sarah were relocated to the Cheorwon area under a government resettlement program. Among the settlers, Im Yun-seok (Simon) was the only Catholic, and he began visiting the new village to evangelize. As residents struggled to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar surroundings, some accepted the faith and a Catholic community began to take shape.

The conditions of the border region placed serious limits on the community's early religious life. Because the village was inside the Civilian Control Line, military exercises or emergencies could sometimes prevent a priest from entering, and there were occasions when Sunday Mass could not be celebrated. In those circumstances, the Catholics gathered each week to study the faith on their own and sustain their community. Official information from the Diocese of Chuncheon records the formal establishment of Mahyeon Mission Station in February 1961, allowing the voluntary formation of the community from 1959 to be distinguished from its later canonical organization as a mission station.

Mahyeon became a mission station under Kimhwa Parish. Kimhwa Parish itself was established in 1959 and has served the border region of Cheorwon, and current diocesan records explicitly list Mahyeon under its jurisdiction. The history of Mahyeon is significant as an example in which lay Catholics built and preserved a community of faith amid disaster, migration, and military restrictions, and that community was subsequently incorporated into the formal pastoral structure of the diocese.
