Catholic traces in the Gueup area of Haman can be found in late nineteenth-century records. A diocesan historical study cites Father Robert Kim Bo-rok's pastoral report for 1883, which lists Bamdae, identified as “Haman Gueup,” together with Dongcheon and Nonsil among the Catholic communities of Haman. The report covers activity from June 1882 to May 1883 and shows that Father Robert had already visited the community in 1882 to administer baptism and confession. The diocesan study explains that a “mission station” at the time did not necessarily mean a separate chapel building; it often referred to a Catholic village whose members gathered in a private home for Mass and prayer.

The name Bamdae disappears from missionary statistics after 1889. There is therefore no basis for claiming an uninterrupted organizational continuity between the nineteenth-century community and the present Gueup Mission Station. Even so, the existence of a community visited by a priest in the early 1880s is important evidence that Catholic life in the Gueup area has deep roots.

After the parish system in Haman became more firmly organized in the twentieth century, Gueup again appears in records as a mission station of Haman Parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea explicitly lists Gueup among the parish's mission stations, and the current Catholic directory confirms that a mission station of the same name remains in the Diocese of Masan. The most careful reading of its history is therefore to acknowledge the documentary gap while recognizing a recurring and enduring Catholic presence in the same local area.

For this reason, the term “mission station” should not be read as if it referred to exactly the same institutional unit in every period. In nineteenth-century missionary reports, it often meant a Catholic village and meeting place visited periodically by a priest, whereas a modern mission station is administered more clearly as a local community under a parish. In the case of Gueup, the documentary record between those periods is insufficient, so distinguishing the existence of an old Catholic community in the area from the institutional identity of the present mission station is essential for historical accuracy.
