Gondae Mission Station

History & origins

The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records 1909 as the year Gondae Outstation was established. This shows that a Catholic community in the form of an outstation existed in the area long before the present parish structure of the Diocese of Andong was formed. However, available reliable public sources do not establish who founded the community or where its earliest liturgical gatherings took place.

Dain Parish was established in 1961, and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia later lists Gondae among the outstations under Dain Parish. Gondae can therefore be confirmed as a community that retained an earlier outstation tradition and continued within the pastoral jurisdiction of the parish organized later. Although detailed records of its earliest phase are lacking, the 1909 establishment record and the later parish relationship confirm the continuity of an outstation community that has lasted for more than a century.
