Godang Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in Munnae-myeon, Haenam County, in the southwestern area of the Archdiocese of Gwangju, and belongs to Usuyeong Parish. The archdiocese's official record confirms the same address as the package and identifies its pastoral area as Godang-ri, Gopyeong-ri, Gojeon-ri, Godae-ri in Munnae-myeon and Garam Village in Hwawon-myeon.
A Korean Catholic gongso, or mission station, is a local faith community smaller than an independent parish, where Catholics gather for prayer and continue their life of faith under the pastoral care of a mother parish. Godang Mission Station serves as a local point of connection through which Catholics living across several villages in western Haenam remain linked with Usuyeong Parish and sustain communal faith.
The place is therefore best understood not as an independent parish church with a resident priest, but as a local prayer place and community belonging to Usuyeong Parish. It illustrates the role of a mission station in connecting a small, dispersed rural community with the sacramental and pastoral life of the parish and archdiocese.
History & origins
The Catholic community at Godang Mission Station traces its roots to around 1900, before the mission station was formally established. A Catholic Times report based on local testimony explains that a sijo poetry gathering of about twenty local residents gradually developed into a gathering of faith, forming the roots of the community.
Efforts to establish a mission building became concrete in the 1950s. In 1954 the community purchased 538 pyeong of land and began building a 35-pyeong mission chapel. Funds came from the sale of relief supplies, fundraising, and the labor of local Catholics, and the roof was completed in 1956. On April 15, 1957, about ten Catholics led by Paul Jeong Jeong-bong began mission-station liturgy in a school residence, marking the formal establishment of Godang Mission Station.
The Archdiocese of Gwangju currently lists Godang as a mission station of Usuyeong Parish. Its development from an early twentieth-century local faith gathering into an established mission community in the 1950s shows the long continuity of Catholic life in Munnae-myeon, Haenam.
