Goneung-ri Mission Station is a Catholic mission community on Ganghwa Island in the Diocese of Incheon, connected with Onsu Parish and serving Catholics in the rural area of Goneung-ri, Bureun-myeon. It was formed so that believers living at a distance from a parish church could gather nearby for prayer and liturgical life, and it remains listed as an Incheon diocesan mission station in the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea.
Goneung-ri reflects a characteristic pattern of Catholic life on Ganghwa, where small village chapels sustained communities outside the main parish centers. Its development is also connected with the period of active Maryknoll missionary work on the island. Today the mission station offers a clear example of both the historical traces and continuing presence of mission-station-centered Catholic life in southern Ganghwa.
History & origins
Goneung-ri Mission Station established a stable community base during the period when Maryknoll missionaries were active in the Ganghwa area. According to a Catholic Peace Broadcasting report on the mission station, land was purchased in Goneung-ri in 1966 and a mission building was constructed, providing a regular gathering place for local Catholics.
The physical base of the community was gradually expanded. In 1981 Fr. Jang Hui-yeong, then pastor of Ganghwa Parish, purchased an additional 610 square meters of land around the mission station. This step helped secure the property and facilities needed for a small rural Catholic community to continue over the long term.
The present mission-station building was completed in November 1997 and blessed in a ceremony presided over by Bishop William J. McNaughton. The modest red-brick chapel became a new home for the faith life previously sustained in the older mission building. The movement from the first chapel of the 1960s to the present building of the 1990s shows how local Catholics preserved and renewed a village center of faith over several decades.
