Gyeongcheon Mission Station is a mission community of Gosan Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju, located along the route to Daedunsan in Gyeongcheon-myeon, Wanju County. Both the diocesan mission-station guide and the Catholic Church directory in Korea identify Gyeongcheon as one of the mission stations belonging to Gosan.
Its significance goes beyond that of a small rural chapel. It preserves a visible link with the long history of Catholic village communities in the Gosan area. It is a place where believers living at a distance from the parish church gathered and sustained their faith, and it also helps visitors understand the pastoral network through which Gosan Parish has served a broad mountainous and rural region.
History & origins
Gyeongcheon Mission Station was established in 1884. A Diocese of Jeonju bulletin explains that missionaries such as Riouville and Jojo were especially active in the Gosan region at that time and that Catholic communities were growing so quickly that several mission stations could be established in a single year. Gyeongcheon was one of the communities formed in that period. The date agrees with the establishment year recorded in the Catholic Church directory in Korea.
The origin of Gyeongcheon therefore belongs to the late nineteenth-century process by which missionaries organized and regularly visited scattered Catholic communities in mountain areas after the period of persecution. It later remained a mission station of Gosan Parish and continued to serve as a local point connecting Catholics living near the Daedunsan route with the wider parish community.
