Gangha Mission

History & origins

The Gangha mission-station community began to take shape around 1996. The area did not inherit an old Catholic village; rather, Catholics who had moved from Seoul and other places began to gather there. Because early Korean Catholic believers connected with the Cheonjinam scholarly gatherings were believed to have passed through this area on their way to Cheonjinam, the new community was at first sometimes called “Gwangam Mission Station,” after the pen name of Yi Byeok.

The community celebrated its first Mass in 1997 and held its first small-community gathering in 1998. Without a building of its own, however, members moved among the mission leader’s home, a parishioner’s workshop, a container structure, and other temporary locations for prayer services and Mass. This unstable period continued for roughly a decade, but it also strengthened the community as members relied on one another to sustain Catholic life.

In September 2007, construction of a permanent mission-station building began on land provided by Cheonjinam Shrine. Built through the donations and participation of the faithful, the new facility was designed not only as a chapel for liturgy but also as a retreat space where Catholics could stay overnight and pray. For this reason it also became known as the “Haneuljari Retreat House.”

The building was dedicated in October 2008, finally giving the community a stable center after years of moving among temporary spaces. Gangha has since continued as a local Catholic community linked to Toechon Parish and as a place where pilgrims and retreatants can pause for prayer on the way toward Cheonjinam. Its importance lies not in the survival of an ancient Catholic village but in the way a modern community of believers came together and built its own mission station.
