Yeonbong Church is the church of St. Timothy Parish, Yeonbong, in the Central District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. Its patron is St. Timothy, and it functions as the center of parish life for Catholics in the southern part of Hongcheon-eup, where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life are carried out.
The official history of the Diocese of Chuncheon describes the parish territory as the area south of the Hongcheon River and notes that it borders Yangdeokwon and Seongsan parishes as well as Hoengseong Parish of the Diocese of Wonju. Yeonbong Church is therefore best understood as the parish center serving the southern urban area of Hongcheon as it developed into a distinct local Catholic community.
History & origins
Yeonbong Parish was established on September 8, 1999, by separation from Hongcheon Parish. The Diocese of Chuncheon records that St. Timothy was designated as the patron from the beginning and that the territory south of the Hongcheon River was organized as an independent parish jurisdiction. This can be understood as a pastoral response to the expansion of the Hongcheon urban area and the growth of the Catholic community, allowing pastoral care to be provided closer to the faithful.
