About this place
Toegye Catholic Church is the church of St. Peter Yu Tae-chol Parish in the Namchuncheon District of the Diocese of Chuncheon, with the Korean martyr St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron saint. The parish was formed as the southern part of Chuncheon and the Toegye-dong residential area expanded, and it serves as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for local Catholics.
St. Peter Yu Tae-chol was a young martyr of the Korean Church, and the parish name itself keeps the memory of martyrdom before the community. Toegye Church is therefore both an ordinary urban parish and a place where the faith of a Korean martyr is incorporated into the identity and spiritual life of the local Catholic community.
History & origins
Toegye Parish was established on September 1, 1998, after being separated from Jukrim-dong Cathedral Parish and Hyoja-dong Parish. As both parishes became crowded with growing numbers of faithful, the need for a new parish increased, and the diocese had secured the present site in 1995. At its foundation, the new community consisted of 801 households and 2,217 Catholics from parts of Toegye-dong, Onui-dong, Samcheon-dong, Chiljeon-dong, and Seo-myeon.
Soon after the parish was established, the first Mass was celebrated in a prefabricated temporary church on September 12, 1998. Once the community became established, plans for a permanent church moved forward, and a church-building committee was formed in September 2004.
The present church was completed after construction and dedicated on November 11, 2006, with Bishop John of the Cross Chang presiding. The move from a temporary structure to a permanent church reflects how the parish took root independently alongside the rapid growth of southern Chuncheon.
