Seongsan Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in Seongsan grew as a mission station before becoming a parish. According to the Diocese of Chuncheon, land was acquired in Seongsan-ri, Hwachon-myeon, in 1956, and that spring a small three-room chapel made of earth bricks was built, giving the community a stable mission-station base. It began with only about twelve households and forty-two Catholics, but as the number of faithful increased, repeated requests were made for an independent parish.

As the community continued to grow, Seongsan Mission Station was separated from Hongcheon Parish and elevated to parish status on August 16, 1976. Construction of a new church followed the elevation, and diocesan records state that the church was blessed on September 14 of the same year. It was the transition of a small rural mission station into a center of pastoral life for the surrounding area.

After its establishment as a parish, Seongsan continued to maintain close ties with neighboring mission stations and assumed responsibility for Catholic communities spread across eastern Hongcheon. Songjeong was itself an old Catholic center from which Hongcheon Parish had once developed, while Duchon, Cheoljeong, Yeongnae, and Naechon also served Catholics living far apart in rural settlements. The history of Seongsan Parish is therefore both the story of one parish’s growth and the formation of a wider pastoral network linking several mission communities.
