Sangnam Mission Station is recorded by the Diocese of Chuncheon as having been established in January 1995. Girin had been elevated to parish status shortly before, on April 19, 1994, so the creation of Sangnam can be understood within the early development of the new parish as it organized local communities to provide closer pastoral care across the broad mountain areas of southern Inje County.
The Catholic community in the Girin area has a much longer history. Diocesan records mention a Catholic village before 1939, household prayer gatherings before the Korean War, renewed mission-station activity in the 1950s, elevation to quasi-parish status in 1972, and a period of joint pastoral care with military chaplains before Girin became a parish in 1994. Sangnam Mission Station was established in 1995 on this pastoral foundation.
Public official sources do not provide a detailed later chronology of the Sangnam building or local events. They do, however, continue to record Sangnam as a mission station of Girin Parish, showing that it became an enduring community supporting Catholic life in the mountain region.
