About this place

Samsan Mission Station belongs to Jumunjin Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in the Diocese of Chuncheon. It is a local Catholic community serving the mountainous area of Yeongok-myeon, Gangneung, where the faithful remain connected with their parish and continue their life of faith. The Diocese of Chuncheon officially lists Samsan under Jumunjin Parish.

Jumunjin is a long-established parish that cares for several mission stations in northern Gangneung and neighboring areas. Within this pastoral network, Samsan provides a place for Catholics who live far from the parish church. As a mission station, it enables the faithful to gather for prayer, celebrate Mass, and sustain community relationships. In this way, Samsan continues to serve as a local center of Catholic life within a mountain community.

History & origins

According to the mission-station records of the Diocese of Chuncheon, Samsan Mission Station was established in July 1959. This period coincided with the rebuilding of parish life in the Jumunjin area after the Korean War. Jumunjin Parish resumed functioning as a parish when a priest was again assigned there in 1951, and after Mass began in a new church in 1955, it gradually re-established a pastoral network serving surrounding communities.

Within this pastoral jurisdiction, Samsan developed as the Catholic community for the mountain area of Yeongok-myeon. Current diocesan records still list it as a mission station of Jumunjin Parish, and the parish’s Mass information separately includes celebrations at Samsan, confirming the continued life of the community.

Public official sources do not preserve enough detail about later changes to its buildings or other specific events. What is clear is that since its establishment in 1959, Samsan has continued as a mission station linked to Jumunjin Parish, reflecting the way Catholics in a mountain area have sustained their faith within a parish-centered pastoral network.
