About this place

Ohsang Spirituality Center is a retreat house registered in the Diocese of Chuncheon and entrusted to the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ. The official Catholic directory lists the center and the Passionists' St. Gemma Galgani Monastery as separate entries at the same Yangyang property, showing that the religious community and the retreat apostolate operate in close connection.

The center is rooted in Passionist spirituality, especially the tradition of remembering the Passion of Christ and seeking God through silence and prayer. From its opening it was intended for individual retreats open to clergy, religious, and lay people, as well as small family retreats. Its central character is therefore not that of a tourist facility, but of a place for solitude, reflection, prayer, and spiritual retreat.

History & origins

Ohsang Spirituality Center was blessed and opened on April 16, 1999, in Sonyang-myeon, Yangyang-gun. Established by the Passionist vice-province in Korea, the property included a main building and a separate house and was dedicated as a place where clergy, religious, and lay people could make individual retreats. It was also designed to accommodate small family retreats.

From the beginning, the center served not only as a retreat house but also as a Passionist novitiate and spirituality research center. Its stated spiritual direction was to help retreatants encounter God through the experience of 'solitude,' an important element of Passionist spirituality. The opening blessing was presided over by the vicar general of the Diocese of Chuncheon. This shows that religious formation and retreat ministry for the wider Church were combined at the site from its beginning.

Today the official Catholic directory lists Ohsang Spirituality Center as a retreat house of the Diocese of Chuncheon and separately records the Passionist community at the same address as St. Gemma Galgani Monastery. The center that began in 1999 therefore continues as a retreat apostolate closely connected with the monastery community.
