About this place
Naechon Mission Station is a mission station in Naechon-myeon, Hongcheon County, under Seongsan Calvary Holy Cross Parish of the Diocese of Chuncheon. It serves as a local place where Catholics who live at a distance from the parish church can gather for Mass and community faith life, and the official diocesan mission-station list records both its present jurisdiction and its year of establishment.
Seongsan Parish is described by the diocese as a parish that serves several rural mission stations, and Naechon Mission Station forms part of that pastoral network, linking local Catholics with the parish. Its present identity is therefore that of a mission station belonging to Seongsan Parish rather than an independent parish.
History & origins
The official mission-station list of the Diocese of Chuncheon records 1967 as the year Naechon Mission Station was established. This shows that a Catholic mission-station community already existed in Naechon-myeon before the Seongsan community itself was elevated to parish status.
The Seongsan community was elevated from a mission station of Hongcheon Parish to a parish in August 1976, and current diocesan records identify Naechon Mission Station as being under Seongsan Parish. In 2019, a blessing was held for Naechon together with several other mission stations of Seongsan Parish, confirming a later renewal of the mission-station facilities.
The available official sources do not give the exact date when Naechon came under Seongsan Parish or details of the earliest chapel construction. The securely documented history therefore consists of its establishment in 1967 and its later continuation within the mission-station pastoral network of Seongsan Parish.
