About this place
Naechon St. Peter Parish belongs to the Western District of the Diocese of Chuncheon and serves the Catholic community of Naechon-myeon in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province. Its patron is St. Peter the Apostle, and the parish church is the center where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and take part in parish community life.
According to diocesan records, the community grew through a quasi-parish stage together with the Gasan-area community before becoming an independent parish. The present church was built to overcome the limited capacity and difficult sloping site of the earlier prefabricated church, showing how the parish’s physical foundation expanded along with the growth of the local Catholic community.
History & origins
The Naechon community began on September 10, 2005, within the St. Thomas quasi-parish structure together with the Gasan mission-station community. As the community grew and developed a basis for self-support, the need increased for Naechon to become a separate parish.
On September 14, 2008, Naechon St. Peter Parish was separated from Gasan St. Thomas the Apostle Parish and formally established as an independent parish. On September 28 of the same month, Bishop John of the Cross Chang Yik presided over a Mass celebrating the establishment of the new parish community.
The early parish church was a prefabricated structure with limited capacity, and the steep site also created difficulties. A new church was therefore planned, construction began in 2019, and the completed church was dedicated on September 12, 2020, by Bishop Luke Kim Woon-hoe.
The progression from quasi-parish to independent parish and then to a new church building shows how the Naechon Catholic community gradually developed its pastoral and physical foundations in step with its growth and self-reliance.
