Mulchi Church

History & origins

The Mulchi Catholic community traces its beginning to 1953. According to the Diocese of Chuncheon, Mulchi Mission Station was established that year under Yangyang Parish. In an area without its own parish, local Catholics continued their common faith life around the mission station. In 1984 the pastoral jurisdiction changed and Mulchi became a mission station of Seorak-dong Parish.

As the Catholic community in Mulchi and the surrounding Ganghyeon-myeon area developed, the basis for an independent parish emerged. On January 25, 2018, the Diocese of Chuncheon elevated Mulchi to parish status with responsibility for the Ganghyeon-myeon area of Yangyang-gun. The diocesan record notes that the community then consisted of 94 households and 194 Catholics. The new parish chose “Mary, Queen of the Family” as its patronal title, which continues in the parish’s present official name.

Mulchi’s history can thus be summarized in three stages: a mission station of Yangyang Parish from 1953, a mission station of Seorak-dong Parish from 1984, and an independent parish from 2018. It is the story of a coastal Catholic community that maintained its faith under the pastoral care of different parishes and eventually developed into a parish of its own; the present church embodies that transition from mission station to independent pastoral community.
