Mogok Retreat House

History & origins

A retreat facility at Mogok was already operating in the same area before the present buildings were erected in 2022. An older diocesan retreat-house listing preserved on GoodNews Catholic Information records a “Mogok House of Prayer” in Mogok-ri, Seomyeon, Hongcheon-gun, with the same main telephone number used by the present facility. This source does not establish the original founding year, but it does show that the 2022 construction was not the beginning of the institution itself; rather, an existing place of retreat and prayer continued in a new physical form.

The current introduction by the Diocese of Chuncheon states that new buildings were constructed in 2022. The new complex consists of a church, a priest’s residence, and retreat accommodations, with six arched openings incorporated into the priest’s residence and a prayer grotto provided as an additional place of prayer. The change can therefore be understood as a reorganization of liturgical, residential, and prayer functions while maintaining the earlier character of a house of prayer.

The publicly available official sources do not give a detailed account of the original opening date or the institution’s earliest founders. The history that can be stated securely is therefore limited to the existence of a retreat and prayer facility at Mogok before the present construction and the 2022 rebuilding that created the current arrangement of spaces.
