About this place

The Capuchin community in Gapyeong is officially listed as the “St. Felix of Cantalice Fraternity / Novitiate,” a Capuchin Franciscan religious community within the Diocese of Chuncheon. Its role as a house for formation and community life is explicit: it is a place where members in formation learn the prayer, fraternity, and Franciscan tradition of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.

The Capuchins belong to the Franciscan family that follows the spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi. The Gapyeong fraternity holds a distinctive place in the history of the Capuchins in Korea as the site where the novitiate became established. As a house where candidates learn religious life through prayer and fraternity, it has a character different from that of an ordinary parish church.

History & origins

The Capuchin community in Korea began on July 16, 1986, when four friars from the Irish Province of St. Francis and St. Patrick arrived in Korea. At first they stayed at the Franciscan friary in Jeong-dong, Seoul, and later established a more permanent community base in the city while beginning to receive Korean vocations.

A novitiate was opened in Cheongpa-dong, Seoul, in 1995, and the following year the first Korean novices made their profession. As the formation structure of the order developed, the novitiate was moved to Gapyeong, within the Diocese of Chuncheon, in 1997.

In 2000, the Gapyeong novitiate, placed under the patronage of St. Felix of Cantalice, the first saint of the Capuchin Order, was blessed. The Gapyeong fraternity thus became a key place of formation during the early establishment of the Capuchins in Korea, continuing today as the “St. Felix of Cantalice Fraternity / Novitiate.”
