About this place

Jinbu Church is the church of Jinbu Parish of Mary, Queen of the Clergy, in the Yeongdong District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. The diocese identifies “Mary, Queen of the Clergy” as the parish patron and describes the parish as serving the Jinbu-myeon and Yongpyeong-myeon areas. In the broad mountain and tourism region of Pyeongchang, it is a parish where residents and visiting Catholics continue their life of faith through Mass and the sacraments.

Jinbu Parish became an independent community through the reorganization of Catholic pastoral territories in Pyeongchang, and it later became the parent community from which Hoenggye and Bongpyeong grew into separate parishes. Today Jinbu Church carries out ordinary parish liturgy and pastoral care while also serving as a center that connects Catholic communities across a widely dispersed mountain region.

History & origins

Jinbu Parish was established on September 10, 1968, when a mission station under Pyeongchang Parish was elevated to parish status. With Mary, Queen of the Clergy as its patron, the new parish began as an independent pastoral center for Catholics in the eastern mountain region of Pyeongchang.

In 1969 diocesan boundaries in the Pyeongchang area were reorganized. Daehwa Parish came under the Diocese of Wonju, while Jinbu Parish remained under the Diocese of Chuncheon. This change was an important turning point that clarified Jinbu’s diocesan affiliation and pastoral territory during the restructuring of Catholic jurisdiction in the region.

As the parish community grew, its mission stations also developed into independent parishes. Hoenggye was elevated from mission-station status and separated as a parish in August 1995, and Bongpyeong followed in 2014. This history shows that Jinbu served not only its own local community but also as a mother parish that supported the growth and eventual independence of Catholic communities in eastern Pyeongchang and the surrounding mountain areas.
