About this place
Jangpyeong Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in Hwachon-myeon, Hongcheon, within the Diocese of Chuncheon and is currently under Seoseok Parish. Unlike an independent parish with a resident pastor, a mission station receives pastoral care from its parent parish and provides a local setting in which Catholics can sustain community life. Jangpyeong has served this role in a broad rural area, allowing Catholics who live far from the parish church to gather for prayer and, when scheduled, the celebration of Mass.
The Diocese of Chuncheon's mission-station list and the history of Seoseok Parish show that Jangpyeong has long continued as one of the parish's local Catholic communities. Although it is different in scale and structure from a parish church, it remains important for nearby Catholics as a place to maintain community and stay connected with the parish. It is therefore most accurately understood as a mission station belonging to Seoseok Parish rather than as an independent parish.
History & origins
According to the official mission-station list of the Diocese of Chuncheon, Jangpyeong Mission Station was established in 1957. During this period, a number of mission communities were being formed in the eastern and mountainous parts of Hongcheon so that Catholics living far from a parish church could sustain local community life. Jangpyeong became one of these rural Catholic communities.
Its jurisdiction became clearer as the Catholic community of Seoseok developed. After the Seoseok mission community built a chapel and related facilities through the efforts of local Catholics, it was elevated to parish status in 1968. At that time, the new Seoseok Parish assumed responsibility for mission stations including Jangpyeong, Saenggok, Naemyeon, Mulgolli, and Gwangwon. Jangpyeong has continued its Catholic life as a mission station belonging to Seoseok Parish.
The public diocesan sources do not provide a detailed architectural chronology or a complete record of every later change at Jangpyeong. Nevertheless, the documented foundation in 1957 and its placement under Seoseok Parish from 1968 show the long continuity of a rural Catholic community that has remained a mission station rather than developing into an independent parish.
