Inje Church

History & origins

Inje Parish was established on June 26, 1954, when it was separated from Hongcheon Parish. In its early years, the parish combined relief work with evangelization, distributing food and supplies received through American Catholic relief assistance to local residents. With no permanent church building, a tent was erected behind the present church as a temporary worship space. After it was destroyed by fire, Catholic members of the U.S. military helped provide a Quonset-style temporary structure, which the community used for about two years.

Work toward a more permanent church began in 1957 at the present site. A theater dating from the Japanese colonial period had stood there, but its upper structure had been destroyed during the Korean War, leaving only the walls. The parish reused those walls and, with American assistance for design and construction, completed the church on November 27 of that year. The integration of the church and rectory within a single building remained an uncommon architectural arrangement for the period.

The building later came to be valued as evidence of both postwar reconstruction and the formation of the local Catholic community. Its relatively well-preserved original form was also recognized, and on February 14, 2019, it was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage. The history of Inje Catholic Church thus traces a path from postwar relief and evangelization to the establishment of a local community and the preservation of that history as cultural heritage.
