About this place
Idong Catholic Church is St. John the Apostle Parish in the western district of the Diocese of Chuncheon. It covers the whole of Idong-myeon in Pocheon and serves as the local center for Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life. Its official diocesan name is “Idong St. John the Apostle Parish.”
Before becoming an independent parish, the Catholic community in Idong existed as a mission station of Ildong Parish. For a period, the chapel also served as the church of the Fifth Corps, so its history overlaps with military chaplaincy as well as local parish life. The present parish grew from this background into an independent pastoral community for local residents, preserving traces of the interaction between military and civilian Catholic life in the border-region setting of Pocheon.
After elevation to parish status, the whole of Idong-myeon was organized as one pastoral territory, giving the church a broader responsibility than it had during the mission-station period. The transformation of a place once used as a corps church into a local parish reflects the way military life and the civilian community intersected in the Catholic history of northern Pocheon.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Idong existed as a mission station under Ildong Parish. The mission chapel was also used as the church of the Fifth Corps and served as the residence and office of the military chaplain. The early history of the Idong community therefore lies at the intersection of local mission-station life and military chaplaincy in the same space.
Idong Mission Station was separated from Ildong Parish and elevated to a parish on February 3, 2010. With the establishment of the new parish, the whole of Idong-myeon in Pocheon became its pastoral territory, and an independent community dedicated to Saint John the Apostle began. The published diocesan history does not provide earlier details such as the original founding year of the mission station or its construction history, but it clearly records the transition from mission station to parish and the community’s connection with military ministry.
