Gwanin Mission Station is a mission station in the Western District of the Diocese of Chuncheon and is under the pastoral care of Uncheon Parish. It serves as a local Catholic community through which Catholics in Gwanin-myeon, Pocheon, can continue their communal life of faith at some distance from the parish church, and the official diocesan registry lists it under Uncheon Parish.
Gwanin is best understood not as an independent parish but as a mission station within the pastoral jurisdiction of Uncheon Parish. It has served to connect the parish with Catholics living across the wide territory of the western part of the diocese, and its present affiliation is linked to the reorganization of parish structures in this area around the beginning of the 1970s.
History & origins
The official mission-station records of the Diocese of Chuncheon give 1954 as the year Gwanin Mission Station was established. Public diocesan sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the earliest stages of its activity, but they do confirm that an organized mission-station community existed in the Gwanin area by the mid-1950s.
A major change in its jurisdiction occurred on November 15, 1970, when Uncheon Mission Station was elevated to parish status. According to the history of Uncheon Parish, the mission stations of Gwanin, Jipori, Munhye-ri, and Yangmun, which had been under Cheorwon Parish, were transferred to the newly established Uncheon Parish. From that point Gwanin became one of Uncheon Parish’s local communities, establishing the jurisdictional arrangement that continues today.
