Gwangpan Mission Station is a mission station in the Namchuncheon District of the Diocese of Chuncheon and is under Gangchon Queen of Peace Parish. It serves as a local center linking the Catholic community of the Gwangpan area in Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon, with its parish, and the official diocesan mission-station registry confirms its affiliation with Gangchon Parish.
The mission station is also closely connected with the formation of Gangchon Parish itself. Gangchon was established by bringing several mission-station communities together, and Gwangpan was one of the communities that formed that structure. Gwangpan can therefore be understood not merely as an auxiliary place but as one of the local Catholic communities that helped constitute the present parish.
History & origins
According to the official mission-station records of the Diocese of Chuncheon, Gwangpan Mission Station was established in November 1973. Public diocesan sources do not provide detailed information about its activities immediately after establishment, but the history of Gangchon Parish confirms that it later existed as a mission station under Hyodong Parish.
Its affiliation changed when Gangchon Parish was established on September 1, 1997. The new parish was formed by bringing together the Gangchon, Chugok, and Hudong mission stations then under Jukrim-dong Parish and Gwangpan Mission Station then under Hyodong Parish. Gwangpan thus became one of the mission-station communities constituting Gangchon Parish and has continued within the pastoral jurisdiction of that parish.
