About this place

Geojin Catholic Church is the Geojin Queen of Victory Parish in the Yeongbuk District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. Dedicated to the Queen of Victory as its patron, it is the parish community of Geojin-eup in Goseong County and serves as a local center where Catholics in the northern East Coast area continue their life of faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Listed by the Diocese of Chuncheon as an independent parish, it is the pastoral unit that supports the ordinary life of faith of local Catholics. More important for understanding the church than changeable details such as Mass schedules or current personnel is its identity as a parish community rooted in Geojin-eup and shaped spiritually by its dedication to the Queen of Victory.

History & origins

Geojin Parish was established on August 16, 1976, after being separated from Ganseong Parish. At the time, its territory covered Geojin-eup and Hyeonnae-myeon in Goseong County. Fr. Oh Nam-seong Hubert, the first pastor, used an inheritance from his parents to purchase the church property and built the present church there.

A religious community also took part in the parish's pastoral work for a period. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae began serving the parish in February 1992 and withdrew on February 28, 2011. This period is recorded as one in which the local parish's ministry was supported by a community of religious sisters.

In 2007 a building was constructed for use as an education and training facility. The diocesan account states that it has been used during vacation periods by young people and other Catholics from urban parishes. The history of Geojin Parish therefore shows a community separated from Ganseong that established its own church and gradually broadened its pastoral base through the cooperation of religious sisters and the addition of educational and training space.
