Geoduri Catholic Church is the Geoduri St. Vincent de Paul Parish in the Southern Chuncheon District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. It is the parish community of Dongnae-myeon in Chuncheon and honors St. Vincent de Paul as its patron. The diocesan record lists the Sisters of Notre Dame as the religious community associated with the parish, and the church serves as a center for local Catholics' Mass, sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The diocesan Mass information also includes a Mass at Gomsil Mission Station in connection with Geoduri Parish. This shows that the parish's pastoral responsibility is not limited to Geoduri Catholic Church itself but also extends to a nearby mission-station community. Through this parish-and-mission-station structure, Geoduri Catholic Church functions as a local pastoral base connecting Catholics in the Dongnae-myeon area of Chuncheon.
History & origins
Geoduri Parish was established on September 27, 2006, after being separated from Hyoja-dong Parish and Aemakgol Parish. Its original territory centered on the Seoksa intersection and Gongjicheon area and included Wonchang-ri, Bongpyeong-ri, and parts of Joyang-ri and Gunja-ri. The diocesan history records 376 households in the community at the time of establishment.
The new parish did not have its own permanent church immediately. For the first month its members celebrated Mass together at Hyoja-dong Catholic Church. They then rented a two-story building in Seoksa-dong and converted the interior for use as a church. With liturgical items donated by other parishes, the community celebrated its first Mass after parish establishment on November 5, 2006, presided over by Vicar General Fr. Lee Jeong-haeng.
The community that began in a temporary church later built the present church. On October 3, 2013, Bishop Luke Kim Woon-hoe presided over its dedication, giving the parish a permanent place of worship. The early history of Geoduri Parish is therefore marked by the gradual establishment of the space and liturgical foundations needed for a new parish community to become an independent pastoral community.
