About this place

Gasan Catholic Church is the Gasan St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in the Western District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. Dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle as its patron, it is the parish community serving Gasan-myeon in Pocheon. The diocesan directory lists it as an independent parish, where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, and the life of the parish community.

A notable characteristic of the parish is that ministry to migrants is carried out within the church complex. The Diocese of Chuncheon states that the church houses a Migrant Workers Center and the Jericho Clinic, which provides medical care for foreign workers. Gasan Catholic Church therefore serves not only as the parish of local Catholics but also as a pastoral base connecting migrant workers with the Church's welcome and care.

History & origins

The development of the Gasan community into a parish took place as the life of the existing mission station and ministry to migrant workers grew together. In 2001, while Gasan was a mission station of Solmoru Parish, a Filipino missionary priest began celebrating Mass for migrant workers under the auspices of the Diocese of Chuncheon's social welfare organization. The diocesan record states that about 100 to 150 people attended at the time.

On September 10, 2005, Gasan Mission Station was joined with Naechon Mission Station, then under Ildong Parish, to form St. Thomas Quasi-Parish. This brought two mission-station communities together into a more independent pastoral unit.

The quasi-parish was elevated to parish status on February 19, 2006, becoming Gasan St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. The history of Gasan thus reflects both the growth of mission-station communities and the way ministry to migrant workers, already present before the parish was established, developed alongside the formation of the local parish.
