Gapyeong Catholic Church is the Gapyeong Mary, Mother of God Parish in the Southern Chuncheon District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. It is the parish community of Gapyeong-eup and honors Mary, Mother of God, as its patron. The Diocese of Chuncheon lists it as an independent parish in the Gapyeong area and records the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the religious community serving there.
Centered in Gapyeong-eup, the parish serves as a focal point where local Catholics continue their life of faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. Its dedication to Mary, Mother of God, expresses Marian devotion as part of the parish's identity and reflects the continuing presence of a long-established Catholic community in Gapyeong.
History & origins
Gapyeong Parish was established on September 1, 1957, after being separated from Cheongpyeong Parish. It initially belonged to the Archdiocese of Seoul, but on November 19, 1969, a diocesan territorial adjustment transferred it to the Diocese of Chuncheon, establishing the jurisdictional affiliation it has today.
As the parish community developed, it also took part in service to the local community. In March 1983, with the cooperation of Gapyeong County, it established Seongga Nursery School and used it for evangelization and local service. The facility closed in 1993 after county support ended and the number of nursery schools and kindergartens in the area increased.
The parish later renewed its worship space as well. The church building now in use was dedicated on June 24, 1996. The history of Gapyeong Parish shows how a local community separated from Cheongpyeong Parish, passed through a change of diocesan jurisdiction, and became rooted in the area through educational and service activities and the establishment of its present church.
