About this place
Galmal Catholic Church is the Galmal St. Charles Cho Shin-cheol Parish in the Western District of the Diocese of Chuncheon, serving the Catholic community of Galmal-eup in Cheorwon County. Its patron is St. Cho Shin-cheol (Carolus), and the diocesan record lists the Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs as the religious community associated with the parish.
The parish is the local pastoral community in which Catholics of Galmal continue their life of faith centered on Mass and the sacraments. A bust of Hong Su-myeong, a lay missionary who contributed greatly to the formation of the parish, stands in the church entrance, preserving within the space the significance of lay evangelization in the community's growth.
History & origins
The Galmal area was once under Cheorwon Parish, but when the Pocheon area was transferred to the Diocese of Chuncheon in 1971, Galmal became a mission station under Uncheon Parish. The Catholic community then grew around Jipori Mission Station. The diocesan history records that Hong Su-myeong, appointed as a lay missionary, traveled among the mission stations and worked actively in evangelization and community organization.
On August 15, 1991, Jipori Mission Station of Uncheon Parish was elevated to quasi-parish status and at that time used the name “Jipori Parish.” This served as an intermediate stage in the community's development from a mission station toward an independent parish.
On April 19, 1994, the community was elevated as Galmal St. Charles Cho Shin-cheol Parish. It continued to use the former mission-station building as its church for a time, until a new church was completed on April 26, 1999 and dedicated as a commemorative church for the 60th anniversary of the Diocese of Chuncheon. The progression from mission station to quasi-parish and then parish shows the gradual growth of the Catholic community in Galmal.
