About this place
Dongmyeon Mission Station is a mission station in Dongmyeon, Yanggu County, under Haean St. Luke Parish of the Diocese of Chuncheon. It serves as a local place where Catholics in Dongmyeon, at a distance from the parish church in Haean-myeon, can remain connected with the parish through Mass and community faith life. The official diocesan mission-station list also records it under Haean Parish.
Haean Parish has pastoral responsibility for Haean-myeon, Bangsan-myeon, and Dongmyeon, and Dongmyeon Mission Station forms part of this wider mission-station network together with Bangsan Mission Station. The essential point in understanding the place is that it is a mission station belonging to Haean Parish rather than a separate parish.
History & origins
The official mission-station list of the Diocese of Chuncheon records 1971 as the year Dongmyeon Mission Station was established. At that time Haean Parish had not yet been created, and Catholics in Dongmyeon continued their mission-station community within the parish structure of the Yanggu area.
On March 1, 2013, Haean St. Luke Parish was elevated from a mission station of Yanggu Parish to an independent parish, and the pastoral territory was reorganized. According to the diocesan history, Dongmyeon and Bangsan mission stations, which had belonged to Yanggu Parish, were transferred at that time to the newly established Haean Parish.
The history of Dongmyeon Mission Station can therefore be summarized as a local Catholic community begun in 1971 and incorporated into the pastoral structure of the new Haean Parish when it was established in 2013. The available diocesan sources do not provide further details about the first chapel or the individuals who led the foundation.
