Damul Retreat House is a retreat and prayer house registered with the Diocese of Chuncheon and operated by the Sisters of Divine Providence in the Inje area. The house was designed with a chapel, prayer spaces, lecture facilities, and lodging so that individuals and groups can step away from daily life and concentrate on prayer and reflection. Its distinctive character lies in offering retreats in a natural setting while members of the congregation directly support spiritual programs and personal accompaniment.
History & origins
Damul Retreat House was built by the Sisters of Divine Providence after construction began in February 2002 and continued for about twenty-two months. According to the Catholic Times, the four-story building was equipped with a chapel, lecture rooms, dining facilities, bedrooms, and prayer rooms and was designed for retreats and spiritual counseling.
On May 18, 2004, a blessing ceremony was held with Bishop John of the Cross Chang Yik of Chuncheon presiding. This ceremony marks the formal opening of Damul Retreat House as a place for the congregation’s spiritual apostolate.
The Sisters of Divine Providence later recorded silent retreats, retreats using prayer methods from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, and personal spiritual interviews at the house. A 2009 congregational record documents a silent retreat of its lay associates at Damul, confirming the continued use of the house for retreat ministry after its opening.
The history of Damul Retreat House is therefore not simply the construction of a lodging facility, but the creation and continued operation of a dedicated place for prayer, meditation, retreats, and spiritual accompaniment by the congregation.
