About this place

Daegwallyeong St. Benedict Parish belongs to the Yeongdong District of the Diocese of Chuncheon and serves the Catholic community of Daegwallyeong-myeon in Pyeongchang County. Its patron is St. Benedict. Located in a highland area that is also a major tourist destination, the parish is a place where local Catholics and visiting faithful can share Mass and parish life.

The diocesan history describes Daegwallyeong as a small parish in a region frequently visited by tourists. The parish has cultivated its grounds in harmony with the natural character of Daegwallyeong, and it has become a community where local Catholics, travelers who seek out a church, and military personnel can gather in faith.

History & origins

The Catholic community in this area traces its beginnings to Hoenggye Mission Station, established in 1955. By 1959 it was under Imdang-dong Parish, and when Jinbu Mission Station was elevated to parish status in September 1968, Hoenggye became a mission station of Jinbu Parish.

Hoenggye Mission Station was elevated to a parish on August 16, 1996. On September 1 of the same year, Bishop John of the Cross Chang Yik presided over the first Mass celebrating the new parish, and in 1998 the former mission-station building was enlarged and renovated and then dedicated as the parish church.

Later, the civil administrative name of the area changed from Doam-myeon to Daegwallyeong-myeon, leading to a change in the church’s name as well. The parish requested the change in June 2012, and on June 13, 2013, the official name was changed from Hoenggye Church to Daegwallyeong Church.

Because the parish’s history spans both the old mission-station name and the later civil place-name, the form Daegwallyeong, formerly Hoenggye, remains useful for understanding the continuity of the place.
